Venables: Beckham Is England's Key To Success
Former England manager Terry Venables believes David Beckham must continue to be involved with the national side
Fabio Capello formally started his job as manager of England on Monday, and today he has received a piece of advice from a former Three Lions boss: keep David Beckham in the side.

Terry Venables, who led England to the semi-finals of Euro 96 before working as an assistant to Steve McClaren, is convinced that former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham embodies the spirit and positive mentality that England need.

Never Say Die
"Beckham has already proved beyond any doubt he should be in Capello’s squad because of the never-say-die attitude that has made him such an influential player for the country," wrote Venables in this column in The Sun.

"He would not be involved as some kind of cheap PR stunt but included on merit. Capello does not have time for any superficial acts and Beckham’s selection for the Switzerland clash on February 6 would be a hard-headed decision to pick the best available."

Track Record
Even against Croatia at Wembley, in a game that England infamously lost 3-2 to crash out of Euro 2008 qualifying, it was Beckham's introduction at half time that gave the Three Lions a kick-start.
Capello himself knows how the LA Galaxy midfielder copes with adversity after the debacle at Real Madrid last season.

"Beckham proved then he could still do everything expected of him and made his comeback," illustrated Venables of the player's time in Spain. "One of his biggest strengths is that he never gives up. It earned him a recall under Capello at Madrid and also under Steve McClaren for England after he was dropped.

"I must say I was very impressed with the way the former skipper handled things when he was axed and how he played after he was selected again. In fact, I would say it is the best he has played for England for a couple of years. Some players inevitably start thinking the odds are stacked against them but not Beckham."
